Classic Console Comparison
While looking for some info, I decided to do a "quick and dirty" comparison of some classic consoles. It's very basic but gives you an idea of the systems' power (or lack thereof). Follow up:
| Atari 2600 | Odyssey2 | Intellivision | Sega Mstr Sys | NES | |
| CPU | 6507 | 8048 | CP1610 | Zilog Z80 | Ricoh 2A03 |
| MHz | 1.19 | 1.79 | 0.90 | 2.50 | 1.79 |
| CPU RAM | 128 bytes | 64 bytes | 1456 bytes | 64kbit | 2048 bytes |
| A/V RAM | nada | 128 bytes | shared | 128 kbit | 2048 bytes |
| BIOS RAM | zilch | 1024 bytes | 7168 bytes | up to 2048 kbit | up to 32K |
| Resolution | 160x192 | 160x200 | 159x192 | 256x192 | 256x224 |
| Palette | 128 | 16 | 16 | 16+16 | 48 |
Now some comments for clarification:
-
Some systems have A/V RAM, some share it with the CPU RAM.
-
Palette means total colors to choose from, not colors on the screen at once.
-
BIOS ROM values can move all over the place, especially with bank-switching.
-
Some systems have faster bus speeds than the CPU speed and have additional processors for video and sound.
- Sound was hard to understand so it was omitted. When we get a better grip on it, we'll include it.
